Teacher aesthetic
Brief discussion of developing teacher aesthetic
Year One
Largely dressed formally, trousers throughout the summer - as held deep contempt for shorts. Did show some flair by wearing tee shirts, no logo - obviously. Felt it was very important to dress "smart", as if by dressing for business it was business time. As if you were making a big difference in children's future and the whole image of yourself as turning up for the job as if it was business time. Developed twitching eye from being tired.
Key items in wardrobe
Long Jeans
Long sleeved tee shirt
Year Two
Consolidated business attire with slightly more casual look, took to wearing tee shirt underneath shirt after mentor teacher complained I wasn't taking the school's "collared shirt" aesthetic seriously enough. Taken to wearing the same shirt combo for school photographs, hoping to achieve this throughout my teaching career. Blue button down. Receding hairline creating issue with presentation as "young teacher", developing curmudgeon approach to teaching age group. Deep inset of tired eyes provoking basically the same conversation with teachers about me looking "tired".
Key items in wardrobe
Desert Boots - nothing but contempt from twelve year olds about this choice
Grey marle teeshirt
Year Three
Started dressing willfully indifferent to fashion but fastidious to platonic ideal of Male teacher aesthetic, a deep retreat into the borders of the realm of plaid Kathmandu short sleeve shirts, shorts with pockets on exterior. Daring to wear Birkenstock sandals, a bold approach. Pattern shirts, feeling that I had sunk into the crevasse of teaching so far that I might start posting powerful messages of affirmation on whiteboard, develop some aphorisms that boil down life's complexities into vacuous sentiment.
Key items in wardrobe
Bottle of Teachers whiskey
Brown shorts
Year Ten
Waiting for Outdoor/mountaineering sportswear sales, utility pockets on every item of clothing. Hair fully dissipated into shaved approach, shark-eye sunglasses, every sentence to students filled with aphorism. Track pants for sports days, a range of polo shirts . Comprehensive collection of sports trainers. Bleak and troubled expression on face at all times, deep ridges in forehead. Forced smile marks grooved in cheeks.
