Post Rylance Funk

In the malaise that has set in since the end of Wolf Hall, mirroring the similar feeling that occurred after finishing "Bringing Up The Bodies", Rylance's absence from Maddy's HP Envy screen has been felt keenly. More specifically, Rylance's wounded depiction of Thomas Cromwell. I have talked to my friend Nick about everything that Rylance brought to that character. What I did not talk about was my incessant need to fill in the gaps of my Rylance back catalogue. To overcome my post Rylance funk.

Rylance is largely a stage actor, which is what I have surmised from my reading about him, so to get the complete Rylance you needed to be there from the start. At the moment I feel, at best, a dilettente on the larger Rylance party that must be happening for his serious fans. I watched this terrible movie adapation of The Seagull, Chekov always coming across stilted and dry on film- see Vanya on 42nd Street andThe Cherry Orchard 1999 edition.1 The film starred Katie Holmes, which normally is the highest recommendation possible, but for whatever reason, her performance fell flat here. I fell asleep and didn't really want to keep watching. It also didn't help that Rylance played some nebbish quiet loser who was unemployed and a twitcher.

The other film was possibly an adaptation of Gogol's The Government Inspector, as it had the same title. Not that that really meant anything to me when I was watching it. It is really good. You should watch this sucker.

1. The Duel was actually quite good, which somewhat spoils the argument.
