Taking Sophie's Choice to the next level

These are perhaps poor reviews, as they are about things that have been around for ages. But lets talk Walking Dead, the game. I quite like this serial game format, released in episodes, is this the new novel? (no).

To put it simply, you, Lee, plucky lecturer who killed his wife and lover (possibly), and now you have to play through a mostly preset story-line in a world where the zombie thing is panning out. It is almost a little bit of a reversion to games of old where there were very little options outside the story line.

But this is no...I don't remember any of those games, other than like Secrets of Monkey Island, and that was pretty good...anyway, this is a very good game, well its a good story. Apart from feverish moments of clicking at zombies faces, most of the game is point and click adventure.

The good is having to make a whole lot of "tough decisions", which then define the later game, from whether to save A or B character, to whether to let someone die or end their life quickly, they verge from truly 50/50 moral quandries, to putting your groups welfare ahead of an individuals, it is really quite glorious. At the end of each episode, your decisions are mapped out against everyone else who has played the game, so you can check your moral intuitions.

It feels just a little like a ethics philosophy class a lot of the time, except with more zombies, and fairly gruesome cartoonised hacking scenes, and less annoying student X and Y who always answer the questions and you sit there silently seething because you don't pay some absurd amount to hear a trumped up undergraduate rant on about their ethical position.

Anyway, that was a waste of a day of my life, and I thought I was over computer games.

  1. Have you played XCOM? I found it emotionally taxing, especially when I started losing my officers. XCOM is very good, but difficult. I got quite into Age of Empires III for a while as well. That is about it for games though.

  2. No, rings a bell. Other than phone games. Phone games are terrible but amazing. 2048 fairly entertaining.
